Level #1 Makespaces
Identification of the key technologies, people and skills, tools, materials, resources, cultures and methods that are needed in makespaces for them to support redistributed manufacturing and in order to move from linear economy practice to circular economy practice.
WHAT WE HAVE DONE
We ran a symposium in for this level in March. Split over two days this was attended by 69 people from a range of backgrounds and affiliations.
Our call for feasibility studies closed on the 9th of April, we had 7 proposals and as the research proposed was foundational to our investigation and useful to subsequent levels we have funded 2 feasibility studies.
Both these projects start in June 2015 and involve a range of partners.
WHAT WE ARE DOING
We have two active feasibility studies, alongside those we are undertaking crosscutting research into relevant themes.
The two active studies are
Study 2 – The OU and Maklab are looking at how education and accreditation in makespaces can equip people with the skills and aptitudes industry needs for redistributed manufacturing, testing their new approach through a 12 week case study.
Study 2 – Sustain RCA are looking at the environmental impact of existing makespace practices, developing and testing an intervention to enable better material choices, reuse and repair within a select group of makespaces.
WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO
Each of the studies will write up their experience and findings as a report, which will form part of our interim, and final reports to the EPSRC.
Throughout we will blog about our research and findings and the studies themselves will also contribute to our site and blog.
